Bert Lance, former OMB director for the Carter administration, was special guest at the annual McNair Bird Supper. Among other achievements, Lance is accredited to having originated the quotation: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Wikipedia says:
"This expression has been popularized from the idea that any attempt to improve on a system that already works well is pointless, and may even be detrimental. Reportedly it originated in the United States in the 20th century from Bert Lance who, as a government official, was quoted in May 1977 issue of Nation's Business as saying, "If it ain't broke don't fix it." Lance's advice, according to William Safire, "has become a source of inspiration to anti-activists."

Do You Remember Lash Larue?

In the 1950's in small-town Georgia, celebrities were scarce. Hollywood and rock stars were about as far as the moon. So we were impressed when any big name came to town. Word spread like wildfire when Lash Larue came to town. He was a young boy's hero in his western wear and his bullwhip. Now we can go to Wikipedia to learn that his westerns were "B movies" and that he frequently visited small theaters when his pictures were playing.

It was known in Soperton back then that Larue's wife was a local girl, so he may have come to our town more often. If that is true, does anybody remember her name and her family? He had other wives, too.

The younger movie audience likely had never seen a bullwhip used in a movie until "Indiana Jones". Guess who trained Harrison Ford to use a bullwhip. You got it.... Lash Larue.

1974 Our Third Redlight

Soperton's third redlight was installed on March 2, 1974. It took over three years of effort by Mayor and Council to get the job done. The light, at Ga. 46 and US 221, was especially necessary as the unfinished I-16 detoured traffic through town. DOT Engineer Bill Greenway (left) supervised the job.
