The Gingko tree at the Methodist parsonage was particularly dazzling that year.

DeeJay John Kea suffered a heart attack.

A reception for 150 volunteers who supported the creation of the Million Pines Welcome Center was held at the Community House.  Councilman Jack Pournelle founded the center, and Judge Clayton Stephens kept it going.

David Mullis had lost his UGA class ring about 1970 at one of the Thigpen ponds.  In 1980, when the water was down, he scratched around with a rake and found it.  Although having lived in Florida most of his life, he still has a tremendous love for his hometown.  He's the son of Mrs. Inez Mullis.

Teen of the Week was Lee Gillis.

The Soperton Garden Club met with Mrs. Jimmie Sue Mullen in Augusta.

Jimmy Nedward Ely, 44, died of injuries while working in Athens,

Albert Marvin Davis died at age 87.  We remember his presence with his grandchildren at the fishing rodeos.

Three-year-old Marnie Hope Smith penned her letter to Santa, as did hundreds of other Treutlen County children.

State Jaycee President Bob Rushton and Swainsboro Jaycee President John Stegall were special guests at the Soperton Jaycees Charter Night, Tim Currie presiding.

Mrs. Hugh (Jean) Gillis became the newest member of the Vidalia DAR.

Mr. andMrs. Tommy Heath announced the birth of a daughter, Alecia Lea, born December 2.

Mrs. Claudia Pullen fashioned handmade furnishings for her granddaughter's doll house, which was constructed by Johnny Roy Scott.

The THS Debate Team included Shannon Britt, Suzanne Harrell, John Ellington, Cheryl Burns, and Karen Pollette.

Jean Ellington received her BS in Psychology from Georgia College (and State University) at Milledgeville.

Discount Furniture Outlet of Dublin held yet another "Going Out of Business" sale.

Mayor Radford questioned the County Board of Commissioners about updating the card system on property taxes.

Great Party at Senior Center

We're departing from usual conventions because Christmas season brings on a lot of picture-taking.

Over on the TREUTLEN E-NEWS site there's a slideshow running of the big Saturday celebration, and we want everybody to have a few days to enjoy the shots, and maybe scrutinize them carefully.  Make comments, too.  Be sure they're tasteful, though.

Last night (Monday) we made these photos at the Senior Center,  where a great party was enjoyed!  Ordinarily we would have posted them on the E-NEWS, but here they are running on a slideshow on the  Bill Ricks of Soperton blog.

1985 Dancing at the SHS Class of 1950 Reunion

They were a lively bunch - the Soperton High Class of 1950, as they celebrated their 35-year reunion at the Community Club House, when the lights were on two wagon wheels.

Others that week: Lots of Mulberry Bush photos, the Thanksgiving cane grinding at B. L. Powell's, Hi-Y cleaning up along East Louisiana Avenue where one of the old warehouses burned, the Wheeler County rattlesnake, Mike Statum's blackberries, and Sara Cook's winning the Tastee Freez trip to Cancun, Mexico.

1975 Mr. Perry with 33rd Degree Cap

The Masons of Harmony Lodge had a ladies night dinner, after which some of the men gathered at the Lodge (upstairs in the DFCS building) for some photos.  I was very embarrassed when I learned that the shutter speed was too fast to synch with the flash.  You see the result in the top photo.

In 2010 with digital technology we have ability to improve such pictures, but far from perfect.  Pictured are Charles Ricks, Junior Curl, Robert Miller, R. A. Perry and Mr. Barrineau.

YOU ARE THERE - December 4, 1985

A suit by 13 black registered voters brought on a five-district plan for the election of county commissioners and school board members. District 5 was 70.73% black.  District 1 was about half and half.  Districts 2, 3, and 4 were from 82% to 88% white.

Mike Statum had fresh blackberries growing behind his shop in the Blackville community.

Sara Cook won the trip to Can Cun, given away by Soperton Tastee Freez.

The SHS class of 1950 held a reunion at the clubhouse.

An old fashioned Thanksgiving was observed, as usual, at B. L. Powell's.

Gilbert Hester shared his programs from Clay's Tent Theater in Soperton, dated December 1938.

The Jaycees were sponsoring the Christmas parade.

Almost 100 deer were registered in the Sportsman's Club contest.

Jerry Horne killed a six-foot diamondback with 19 rattles on GA 46 in Wheeler County.
