Charles M. Zeigler opened his office of land surveying and engineering. He was the son of C. A. and Minnie Zeigler, and was educated by UGA and Tech.  He did a complete survey for the City of Soperton, locating a bronze marker at the center of town, now under asphalt and concrete.  Anybody with a metal detector want to help find it?

Soperton had its first dentist in many years when the Joe Glawson family arrived from a practice near Atlanta. They chose Soperton from a list of towns needing a dentist.  He was from Donalsonville and she from Athens.  Their boys would be about 35 and 40 now.  He worked out of the Main Street office for several years while the Pournelles were in school.

Sharmrock Photo, Ltd. of Dublin sold Kodak Instamatics as low as $18.95.

4-H initiation was combined with Halloween.

Attending the National FFA Convention were Chuck Ellington, Brantley Ricks, and Kenneth Moseley.

Good heavy bulls brought $21-$26 at Jepeway-Craig Commission Co.

President Obama stated last Wednesday, November 3, 2010, that he was prepared to negotiate the Bush tax cuts, set to expire December 31.  Obama wants to continue cuts for those with incomes less than $250,000.  Republicans want the cuts to continue for every taxpayer, including the "filthy rich" top 2%.  Now some Democrats are prepared for compromise by continuing tax cuts for those making less than $500,000.

The 1985 Festival had lots of animals. Ponies pulled carts. There was a petting zoo which included the beautiful milk cow of Steve and Reba Grinstead and family. I like this picture.

Others that week: Football, Bill Barrett with the festival rain gauge, cars packed so close to the railroad that one was hit by a train, adult group at school, TPS program, Chan Carter presenting the color TV to Gloria Burns.

The Million Pines Festival's attendance was at a plateau. Stage entertainment was unpaid and local. The exhibitor base was at a standstill. Then came along the Pruitts. They brought professional show business to Soperton and charged only for room and board. Mrs. Lady Darley was the contact who made it possible.  As time went on and the girls were growing up, they started teaching clogging as well as performing. In 1980 they brought all their top students to the festival.  Their Mom was one of the nicest people.  The family loved Soperton, and we reciprocated. Other cloggers appeared in later years, but none had the sparkle and pizazz of OUR World Champion Cumberland Cloggers.

Others that week: TES Halloween, Donna & Lauren Shurling, the wolfman at SPC, football and band, Gene Bowers's river project, the Hawkinses, Poppy Day, midget team, band awards, deer, Mrs. Hunter's students, kudzu near Kathy's beauty shop.

YOU ARE THERE - November 6, 1985

The dust-free Festival was the rainiest ever, but it was not enough to prevent one of the highest attendance records. The forward-thinking festival leadership had bought a rain insurance policy which paid off to the tune of $10,000.  It rained four-tenths of an inch during the specified two-hour interval that Sunday afternoon.  The funds were used to continue the growth of the festival in 1986.

The Sheriff's Department got a $4,000 grant for information management.

The Vikings lost, 8-6, to ECI.

A 17-point buck was killed in Laurens County by Michael Beasley. It weighed 180 pounds, and it was the 50th deer in the Deer Contest.

Dennard Drugs was selling books: Bill Boyd's "Moon Pies and Muley and Georgia Party Lines," Lewis Grizzard's "Shoot Low, Boys. They're Ridin' Shetland Ponies," and others by Zell Miller, Joe Parham, Roy Chalker and Bob Steed.

Did the people who stayed home cause Jim Marshall to lose his seat?

After the 2010 General Election,  four Democrats continue to represent Georgia in the House of Representatives, but one veteran Congressman, Jim Marshall, was knocked off by the Republican landslide.


What happened?  Was it the TV ad depicting Jim riding to Washington with Speaker Nancy Pelosi?


No, not necessarily.  Not if you look at the details - the boring statistics - the facts. Compare the last two elections, 2008 and 2010.

Although Republican Goddard, in the 2008 election, polled almost 15,000 votes more than Republican Scott did in 2010, he lost the election against Democrat Jim Marshall with less than 43 percent of the votes.

In every county of the 8th district voters stayed home in 2010.  In 2008 there were over 274,000 votes cast, but this year less than 195,000, a difference of about 80,000. In the Eighth Congressional District of Georgia 80,000 voters stayed home.

In Laurens County (Dublin) the voter turnout was 5,000 less than in 2008.  Republican Scott received about the same number of votes this year as Republican Goddard did in 2008 (7,803  to 7,743) the difference was that Democrat Marshall, who received 11,162 votes in 2008, polled only 5,768, barely half of what he received against Goddard two years earlier.

Can you answer these questions?

Who are the people who stayed home?

Why did they vote in 2008 but stayed home in 2010?

Will they show up and vote in 2012?

Consider that in every county the Republican vote was less this year than it was in 2008.  Goddard was a formidable opponent. Well respected, with a wide-standing reputation in the whole district, while Scott had a puny record compared to Goddard's.

My conclusions and predictions are: 

1- That the Republican vote in District 8 maxxed out in 2008.  

2- If Marshall doesn't have anything better to do in 2012, he could run again and easily win.

3- It would take some heavy lifting for the Republicans, who will control the congressional redistricting, to divide the state any worse than the past and current divisions.

4- Unless the world-wide economic crisis continues or gets worse, President Obama will have better ratings in 2012. His 2008 voters will return to the polls in 2012, and it will be crying time for traditional Republicans in the Eighth District.

If you live in the Eighth District and voted against Marshall.....
