YOU ARE THERE - December 31, 1980


County officers were sworn in, and most of them were very experienced: Probate Judge J. Clayton Stephens, Jr. (13 years), Clerk of Court R. H. Warnock (29 years), Sheriff Joe C. Mullis (20 years), Tax Commissioner Wayne Sumner (4 years), Surveyor Charles M. Zeigler (4 years), Coroner Green Higgs (4 years), Commissioner Jim L. Gillis, Jr. (19 years), Commissioner George L. McLendon (2 years), Commissioner Sidney Sherrod (8 years), Judge J. Carlton Warnock 12 years), Solicitor J. Clayton Burke, Jr. (4 years), Superintendent Bobby Driggers (20 years), BOE Member Louise C. Thigpen (Education career began in 1928, only person to served  as teacher, superintendent, and board member), BOE Member Hugene Burns (8 years), BOE Member Charlene Peterson (first term), Justice of Peace Ross Atkinson, Jr. (prior experience), and Justice of Peace Emory V. Barnhill (prior experience).

In a straw poll, 72 percent were in favor of the state program for organ donation.  The most negative response was "It's a bunch of bull."
